Telebit TV Tuner PCI Card FM8330: Watch and Record TV Shows from Your PC

The new FM8330 from Telebit using a PCI slot which all motherboards have. Its ability is similar with other devices around capturing the broadcast TV and FM radio and its ability to record them into the latest video formats. The analog s-video as well as composite connections became standard equipment to handle the transfer and delivery of recording from camcorder and webcam.

To perform its functions, Telebit adopted Honestech TVR 2.5 application which displays the PC recommendations needed for recording in various formats available. For example if it will record MPEG2 format with a choice 320x240pixel resolution, high quality, 2000 bitrate, 25 FPS encoding speed and “Good” setting, FM8330 will recommend an Intel P3 600MHz as the minimum reqirement. This configuration can also be customized to fit the tastes and needs of each user, it even also run smoothly on our older PCs.

Honestech TVR 2.5 application also provides facilities that are often found on most TV tuner device. From recording, scheduled-recording, snapshot, auto-scan, time-shifting and channel surfing. Unfortunately some functions which are quite popular such as picture-in-picture is not included. Its Radio FM function can catch radio broadcast from 87.5 to 108 MHz frequency, and the cool thing is it can be recorded into WMA format. On the con side, scanning the waves can not be done automatically.

Our final verdict, Telebit FM8330 capabilities and features could be classified as standard, which is enough for its main function: support for displaying TV and FM broadcast and recording to analog format.

Pros: high format video recording with minimum requirement, decent reception, good sound quality, reasonable price

Cons: lack PiP function, manual FM radio scan, weird remote control design

PC Asrock Ion 330-BD: Better than Regular BluRay Players?

This device is the successor of Ion nettop Asrock 330 that was released last October. Just to remind, Asrock 330 ion is the nettop that combines Intel’s Atom N270 processor with nVidia chipset Ion.

This combination is slightly deviated from the general grip as Atom nettop is usually paired with the Intel chipset. But Asrock’s “disobedient” makes sense, because our tests have proved Asrock 330 Ion better performance than other nettop.

This success is probably what makes Asrock released Ion 330 with “BD” appendage. BD means BluRay, which suggests that the BD series is equipped with the BluRay optical devices. The price itself is around U.S. $ 485, or U.S. $ 130 more expensive than the plain version. However, given the current BluRay Player price, this device could be a replacement device for a real BluRay Player.

Moreover, the facilities provided by this device is similar to BluRay Player. At the rear, you’ll find an HDMI connector to connect to today’s television. Another alternative, VGA-Out facility is available so that it can also be connected to a regular monitor. Unfortunately in this Asrock 330 Ion Component Out there is no facility that can not be connected to a standard television.

However, our expectation to make Ion 330 as a substitute for BluRay Player is seeing constraints on the software. First, Ion 330 delivered without any operating system. Inside its CD no BluRay movie player software provided. So to play a BluRay movie, you have to buy an operating system and appropriate software. Linux is also not an option because BluRay Player software for Linux still needs much improvement.

If these two software issues can be resolved, Ion-BD 330 can indeed be a substitute BluRay Player. We prove it by connecting this 1.7 kg device to B6000 Samsung LCD TV using HDMI. The film “No Country For Old Man” is running smooth in Full HD resolution (1920×1080). We also can play HD-1080p video without halting. This is special because you can not do that on an Intel chipset-based nettop that dominate today’s market.

Outside of his BluRay ability, Ion 330-BD has standard nettop facilities. In addition to HDMI, on the rear panel are available 6 USB ports, gigabit ethernet, SPDI-F Out. While for storing data, hard drive with 320GB capacity is attached. One thing regrettable is the absent of WiFi facility to connect to a wireless network at home.

With tiny design and glossy appearance, 330-BD Ion Asrock fit very well in the family room, side by side with your HD television. Moreover, this device is very silent in operation. But this combination of hardware and software require funds $ 600, so it is still more expensive than regular BluRay Player. However, because the Asrock 330 Ion-BD is a computer that can also be used to type, connected to the internet, and store data, the device still has a value to consider.

X Mini Capsule: Music on the Go

You would probably not noticed at first glance that this cute round object is a speaker. Its form which is slightly larger than ping-pong ball is a little bit ‘weird’ and unusual for a speaker.

The X-Mini Capsule Speaker is designed as a unique and easy to use portable speaker. This device is suitable for all types of portable devices that require a loudspeaker.

Armed with the rounded design, Capsule speaker is claiming to able to present better sound quality than its rivals who have similar design. This is mainly caused by the existence of a special feature called Vacuum Bass. This feature is an additional space in order to help low-tone reproduction. To use it, we just need to roll it and “unlock” the speakers according to instructions. It will show a kind of funnel that is considered as vacuum. When it opened in this condition, the name Capsule Speaker will be truly reflected, now that this device looks more like a capsule instead of a ball.

This mini speaker uses a rechargeable battery as its power source. These batteries can be recharged through a USB cable and can survive up to 8 hours of use. Quite interesting really. When we talking about quality, low tone produced in Vacuum feature is quite pronounced. Its voice is loud enough despite its small size. This mini speaker portable is easy to accompany you when travelling and become loyal friends for your portable music player.

Anticipating “Super Notebooks”

Not so long ago, Intel announced the existence of Core i7 Quad Core processors for new high-end notebooks. These processors under the code name Clarksfied equipped with quad-core mobile processor to replaces their previous. Technically, Clarksfield is a desktop CPU with low clock speed but has a built-in ability to over-clock. Mobile Core i7 processor developed from the 45 nanometer Intel architecture (Lynnfield) and is the first quad-core processor for notebooks. The previous CPU Core 2 Quad consistsed of two Core 2 Duo CPUs in a single chip.

The biggest innovation in this Clarksfield is the existence of a memory controller which is integrated in the processor. This memory controller function is driving the DDR3 memory modules. Because the controller is in the processor, the communication between the CPU memory is expected to increase significantly compared to CPU Core 2 Duo / Core 2 Quad. According to Intel, increasing system memory bandwidth now reaches more than twice the performance compared to earlier when tested using the SiSoft Sandra 2009.

Another advantage of this architecture is that there is an option to disable or enable parts of processors (cores, caches, I / O, system memory) dynamically and separately. This will enable better notebook save power when idle or during low load conditions (consider there is no current leakage in the disabled section).

Role of Turbo-Boost

Because i7 CPU running at lower clock speed (between 1.6 to 2.0 GHz), Turbo Boost technology that has been introduced in the Core 2 Duo CPU now plays a more important role. By depending on the amount of load and temperature, a single core CPU can be overclocked separately. For example, if only one core used to complete the job (and if adequate cooling system), Core i7-820QM processor can be overclocked from 1,73 GHz to 3.06 GHz. Because of this automatic overclocking capabilities, i7 processors with lower clock speed can achieve higher performance when running older applications (such as various old games), which usually uses one core only. Not surprisingly, the i7 processors performance exceeded Core 2 Duo processors when running various such ‘old’ applications.

The Return of Hyper-threading era

Hyper-Threading technology, which has been introduced in the era of Pentium 4 (Northwood), is now reused by Intel Core i7. If the processors’ core are not fully utilized (ie only executing one floating point operation), Hyper-Threading technology will run a second thread to increase the utilization of the processor core. Because of the presence of Hyper-Threading technology, this seems to have 8 core processor that can work 25 percent faster.

The use of an integrated memory controller and quad core design also resulted in changes in the structure of the i7 cache. Multi-level shared cache is no longer just rely exclusively to the lagre Level-2 cache, but also taking advantage of Level-3 cache. This change is expected to pump performance, particularly when running multithreaded applications.

More Electricity Saving

Because the memory controller integrated in the processor, i7 system design has become simpler. When compared to the use of three chips in the Core 2 Duo system (CPU, Northbridge chip, and Southbridge), i7 core processor chipset requires only one assistant, who handles PCI-E connections, USB, SATA, LAN connections, and voice. One example of this is the PM55 chipset (Ibex Peak), with the ability to handle 14 USB 2.0 ports, 6 ports SATA 3 GB / s, and 8 PCIe 2.0 x1 connections (with a capacity of 2.5 GT). Because it does not contain a memory controller, PM55 chipset will only drains 3.5 W TDP power (compared to 7 W power drawn by the previous PM45 chipset).

With such specifications, it is not surprising that the total power consumption is 45 watts (which sucked by the Clarksfield) plus 3.5 watts (which is drawn by the chipset PM55), still considered better than the power used by the Core 2 Quad (45 watts) + chipset PM45 (7 watts) + chipset ICH9M (2.5 watts) in total.

Performance

According to Intel, this new architecture is promised to be achieved satisfactory performance when running nearly all applications, compared with the previous Core 2 Duo processor. For example, compared with Quad-Core QX9300 processor, the processor i7 920XM performance recorded an increase of 10 to 80 percent. And because it has been equipped with automatic overclocking facilities, i7 also noted a high achievement, both in single mode applications or application thread multithread mode. QX9300 only superior when in certain situations where the overclocking process can not be done automatically by i7.

Asus M60J Equal Contender for Alienware M15x ?

When competitors choosing the size of 15.6 inch screen, Asus is slightly deviated from the grip by providing M60J with a 16-inch notebook into this. Not significantly different, but at least give a broader view of the area. Unfortunately larger size is not accompanied by higher resolutions. This notebook is using the 16:9 widescreen format, but limited to a resolution of 1366×768 pixels; or equal to the Acer Aspire 5942G.

The combination of hardware in this notebook also felt less optimum. This notebook weighs 3.3 kg and using the Intel Core i7-820QM (1.73 GHz), which collaborated with DDR3-1066 memory capacity of 4GB. With that combination, Asus M60J beat all notebook on processors-based test (Sysmark 2007 and encoding video/audio).

However, this notebook only uses the graphics card nVidia GeForce GT240. Actually GT240 still belong to middle class VGA, but still less powerful than GTX260M and GForce GTX 280M used by Alienware and Forsa. As a result, in the graphics card-based test (3DMark Vantage and Stalker), Asus M60J lagging performance and behind the last two notebooks.

This combination seems to show that the Asus M60J targeting multimedia segment more than gamers. This impression is stronger when we see on the multimedia facilities embedded in this notebook. Above the keyboard, we will find the Touch Media that contains a button to adjust the playback of multimedia files. We see its design as too grand, but the blue color that appears when the panel is touched to give its own aura. In addition to the lively panel, Asus also installed speakers from leading manufacturers, Altec Lansing. The quality of the resulting sound pretty crisp, but since there is no subwoofer, the bass still feels less bite.

From the facility side, Asus M60J performed slightly above average. In addition to standard facilities such as WiFi, Bluetooth, FireWire, and USB, the notebook is providing HDMI and eSATA. Other facilities which are not available in other notebooks is a fingerprint scanner, which is located between the touchpad buttons. Other unique facility is the Express Gate, which is a mini operating system that allows us to quickly access the computer. When you choose Express Gate entrance, the system will turn on in about 10 seconds, and available operating system contains standard applications such as browsers and instant messengers. There was not much can be done in the Express Gate, but at least we can email or chat though pressed for time.

Our test with this notebook is spelled out pretty good, though not all satisfactory. We do not like the glossy coating covering the hand rest palm which so easily left behind fingerprints. In addition, the voice sounded fairly strong fan when the computer is working in maximal performance. But its keyboard feels soft and feels good when pressed, while its touchpad is responsive.

All in all, we see it as a good performing and well-equipped multimedia facility piece of technology. If only the provided graphic card is more powerful, this notebook can be a serious competitor for the like of Alienware M15x gaming notebook.

Bold or Onyx? You Decide.

Blackberry solidified his position in the increasingly competitive smartphone market with the launch of Blackberry Bold 9700, or more commonly known by the name Blackberry Onyx. This pice of work which is prepared to replace Blackberry Bold 9000 has a similar appearance to Blackberry Javelin 8900. But make no mistake. When it comes to facilities, Bold 9700 is above the Bold. First is the screen resolution 480 x 360 pixels with 65K color depth, resulting in a very sharp image. Arguably, the Onyx screen deserves honor from all Blackberry products.

In addition, With the BB Media player you can play video or music file type xvid codec, WMV3, MPEG4, audio codec with .3 gp, MP3, WMA9 (.wma / .asf) and MIDI-based pet through the headset 3.5 mm audio jack. In addition, the camera features 3.2 MP who supported video recording, flash, and 2x digital zoom allows you to capture the best moments. Unfortunately, with a screen that measures just 2.44 inches, you will not be too happy to enjoy a picture or video on Bold screen.

3.2 MP camera with flash features produce good quality pictures. Synthetic leather dressings on the battery cover adds an elegant impression.

Another change is on its trackpad which became optical-based, same as we see in Gemini. This is like answering a complaint that the user does not like the performance on the Bold trackball. Thanks to this optical-based trackpad, you can surf the screen and quickly access the applications. While for the keyboard, its size in Onyx somewhat smaller than the Bold, so a little difficult for a user who has big thumb.

It is understandable if the Onyx keyboard size is slightly smaller. Because in order to bring an elegant and powerful impression, RIM trim Onyx’s dimensions of it so it is more slender and lighter than Bold. Wrapped with plastic cassing solid black glossy titanium chrome and color list to make them look sexy. The impression was blended with synthetic leather wrapping on the battery cover to give an impression of elegance.

Micro USB port is used to recharge the battery as well as transfer files. Whereas to enjoy the audio, 3.5-inch audio jack is available.

Another advantage is in the system features. Powered with 624 MHz processor, 256 MB of internal memory, external MicroSD slot and the addition of up to 16 GB, Onyx offers high responsiveness. Support from the Blackberry OS v5.0.0.311 offers faster access and more diverse choice of applications. For connection capabilities, Onyx using the connection quad-band UMTS / HSDPA 2100/1900/850/800 MHz, with the addition of Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g and Bluetooth v2.1 to support the comfort of your communication.

Another facility is also enhanced in the browser, so you can more conveniently access the websites that use Javascript. However, it remains the default browser’s capabilities are still losing some notch when compared to Opera Mini.

Bold era has passed, it’s time for Onyx to fill the top-class smartphone market. Although considered a bit expensive, but with the sophistication and elegance of its design, the BlackBerry Bold Onyx 9700 is worthy to be given the title as The Best Blackberry Ever Been Made.

Acer Aspire 5738PG Touch: Worth a Try?

Alongside the moment of Windows 7 release , touch screen-based products flooding the market. It’s understandable, as one of the leading features of Windows 7 is better support for touch screens. But that does not mean too late if Acer also released the Aspire 5738PG Touch, 15.6-inch notebook that supports the touch screen. According to Acer, this notebook has been prepared well in advance of Windows 7 release. This is proofed by the existence of a special interface called TouchPortal, so that this notebook does not rely on the touch screen features in Windows 7 alone.

TouchPortal itself is a unique interface. To open it, you need to pull scraps of paper shaped area on the desktop. When that is done, open family room-shaped interface. And then we can see a variety of menus with different icons that represented a unique and creative software. For example, media player is represented by a display of the CD player, image viewer as photo-shaped patches, as well as Internet Explorer with IE-logo. If you want to play a song, you simply pull the CD-shaped icon to the main screen and all of your songs collection contained in a notebook will be posted. Really creative.

But frankly, we were not too eager to try this notebook touch. Because, we have tried several notebook with touch screen and is often frustrated with the lack of precision and responsiveness. But this notebook was able to lure us. Aspire 5738PG touch-screen able to provide good responsiveness, since it has support for multi-touch. Problem of precision is still a occured because we need to press several times to select the Close button. But the majority of the finger movement is detected by the screen so the touch screen experience feels good; best of all touch notebooks we’ve ever try.

Even so, there is one question that still propping: what’s the point of having touch notebook? Moreover, Aspire 5738PG is not a tablet PC screen which can be folded and positioned like a notebook. It remains in the form of the notebook so our hand must hang around when touching the screen which was exhausting. In addition, the screen lever is less robust to hold the touch, so the screen will fall little by little when pressed.

Outside the touch screen capabilities, Acer Aspire 5738PG notebook is also true reliable power. Using Intel Core 2 Duo processor P8700 (2.53 GHz) assisted with 800MHz 4GB DDR2 memory, this notebook’s performance looks very rushed. In addition, this notebook uses the ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570 with 512MB memory, which allows this notebook to play today’s games. Endurance of the batteries are not too long, but fair for high-powered notebook like this.

From the facility side, this notebook performed quite complete thanks to the presence of HDMI, fingerprint scanner, card reader, 8X DVD Writer, gigabit ethernet, camera, and 4 USB ports. Even if there are less is the absence of external SATA ports.

Call us old-fashioned, but the truth is the touch screen is not the facilities that we desire from a notebook. But fortunately Acer Aspire 5738PG attraction is not just a touch screen, and this is what fits in our. With the price of US $ 1,299, this notebook has the performance and facilities are highly competitive. So look at Aspire 15.6-inch notebook 5738PG as decent choice with the touch screen as a bonus.

Alienware M15x: Mean Machine for Gamers

Dell’s decision to acquired Alienware in 2006 presumably based on their desire that although the gaming segment reaching slightly but remains a potential market. Not that Dell did not prepare a notebook for gaming segment. It’s just big producers are obviously smart. Alienware is a well-known brand that has been built its reputation with high-end products for gamers. In order to see the gaming market continues to grow, Dell would not half-hearted splash in this market. And goes Alienware as a special line of their gaming, and several series began formally entered into the market just like these M15x series.

Seeing her physical form, Alienware M15x is confident to be mentioned as a desktop replacement (replacement PC) because of its size that is big enough and weighs no less than 4 kg. These dimensions are enlarged due to buried none other than the various components of “steady” for gaming (such as wide-screen 15.6″ with LED lighting system). This notebook also carry the latest mobile processor four-core Intel Core i7-720QM, which is attached to a capacity of 4 GB of DDR3 memory (Dual Channel) and 500 GB hard drive. No doubt this notebook’s power equivalent desktop PC for the upper class and for who are ready for heavy computing.

But what makes M15x looked more powerful is the use of graphics chip GeForce GTX 260M with 1GB DDR3 memory. This chip is a graphics processor for the middle class that satisfy today’s game, at least 260 GTX performance better than the GeForce 9600 or Radeon 5850. Some M15x variants also offered in VGA SLI mode for graphics though more toothed. But as long as we try, GTX 260M single mode alone is very sufficient for any activity as well.

As a gaming notebook, Alienware M15x with an atmosphere thicker muscular and fierce. This is clearly visible from the material that was stiff but strong in every part. The layout of the frontal speakers and a wide armrest makes gaming activities become more attractive. Unfortunately the composition of the keyboard keys, although substantial, did not have enough gap so that its use so feel a bit cramped. However, M15x still attractive with a very adequate completeness of features, this product is equivalent to a desktop PC.

Despite offering a strong gaming concept but Alienware M15x is not for everyone. Its bulky and heavy weights are not necessarily appropriate for your mobile activities. Moreover, the batteries run out too quickly due to high specification. However, if used as a desktop replacement devices, M15x does not disappointing. Because its performance is as ferocious as its appearance. You did not need a headache to upgrade, considering the composition of its own hardware is already high. Dell’s own party acknowledged that the gaming market is limited, because that’s an expensive notebook is not imported in large quantities like other notebooks.

Radeon HD5800 and HD5700 Showdown: Part 2

We have revealed the specification and the technology behind the HD5800 and HD5700. We are now moving to the most important part, its performance!

Performance

As the latest generation graphics card in the upper classes, the Radeon 5870 and 5850 provide excellent performance. With bright GDDR5 memory with 256-bit memory interface, the second graphics card is very convenient to run DirectX 10-based games, even still show a decent performance while running at high resolutions. And for mainstream classes, the Radeon 5770 and 5750 is sufficient for most users. Its performance is also not inferior to the series 5800. Unfortunately the use of 128-bit interface to make its performance a bit stuck. However for use at standard resolution, the Radeon 5770 and 5750 was more than enough.

Test Results

We’ve done a test on the fourth series Radeon graphics card 5 using some software testing. Here are the results obtained by the achievement of every graphics card on each test. As a comparison, we also include test results from previous ATI graphics card, namely the Radeon HD4870.

Conclusion

The four graphics card is a very attractive offer for those who are looking for a graphics card or who want to upgrade. The prices are also quite reasonable given considering that the price war going on now is more intense than the first. Overall, we recommend four graphics cards as a priority choice. But which one is right for you? We give some performance test results for the fourth graphics card then you can consider according to your needs.
